release status

As of 2004-09-22 the current version is: v0.6.2. You can get binary packages for the most popular platforms, and you can build it yourself from source. (This is trivial on a *nix box that has standard development tools installed. It is non-trivial on w32.) More information on the download page.

network status

As of 2004-09-22 the public Mnet network has only a few servers. If you have a solid server with a reliable net connection, you can help! You'll win our lasting gratitude, you'll be helping a Free Software project that has a lot of potential to improve the world, and we'll give you a million Klazumits. See the help-Mnet page.

(Just kidding about the Klazumits. I think.)

development status

As of 2004-09-22 there are two different branches of development. See the Mnet Roadmap (plan for future evolution) document for slightly out of date details.

  • The "old" branch isn't really doing any development, just building packages of Mnet v0.6.2 for various platforms, setting up servers to run a good network, and keeping an eye out for critical bugs.
  • The current branch is targeted at making a release based on several new designs and completely refactored source code. Due to heroic hackery -- notably by Mnet Hackers baka and icepick -- this branch has become a completely usable decentralized filestore (command-line and XML-RPC only -- no GUI), while having much less source code and a much simpler design than the old branch. Bravo, Mnet Hackers!

You can build the current development version yourself from source. The procedure is documented in the README file.

For detailed development status please see , which is used to maintain all planned development (both bug fixes and all other changes). Also view the mnet-devel mailing list and visit the IRC channel "#mnet" on irc.freenode.net.

weekly updates

(Semi-) weekly updates on the progress of the Mnet project are now available.

(Note: whoops, the Mnet Semi-Weekly News is on hiatus. Please write to and tell him how you loved the Mnet Weekly, how you looked forward to it every week, and what a warm, pleasurable glow you would feel if he were to write a new one.
